From this period the 5-.Gibson "factory seconds" in the Henry J. A number of serial numbers were duplicated from 1963 to 1969. Duplicate or no serial/FON number doesnt make things easy, but there are other traits that allow the serial number to make sense (see the General Specs section for more details). For all models, the serial number is stamped on the back of the headstock. See the serial number/FON section for details. Various serial number systems were used by Gibson, and often the same serial number could be used in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.The actual location of the "SEC" seems like it can vary - sometimes over the serial number, sometimes under the serial number (?).I am trying to determine how exactly Gibson treated these "SEC" marked guitars. One question is: did they use them as "freebies" (or, if not total freebies, maybe reduced-price guitars) for artist endorsers? Maybe they were used as endorsement guitars for less established artists of the day, as opposed to the biggest name players? For example, Slash ended up with two 87 Les Paul Standards (he likely got these in late 87 or early 88, approximately). It is imprinted like the serial number is. So I guess I am talking around the 86, 87, 88 time period in particular.GIBSON SERIAL NUMBERS: 0.35 Acoustic / 1.10 Quality Check List (White Paper) / 1.46 2019 Serial-Number - if the last number is a 3 special run / 2.15 HOW T.From what I can tell, in this circa 87 time period, I believe the factory seconds had the letters "SEC" imprinted on the back of the headstock. Also the pyramid bridge changed and the sound hole perfing changed. What I am curious about is Gibson's practices and policies regarding "factory second" guitars in the early Henry J. Late 1928 Gibson Nick Lucas guitar specs: By the end of 1928 the peghead 'The Gibson' logo was inlaid in pearl. This was the video shoot for Sweet Child O' Mine. Slash still did not have his two '87 Les Paul Standards as of this date. Then fast forward to April 11, 1988. If any of you have any experience owning or knowing of any 86-88 "SEC" guitars, I would love to hear about them and what you know about their histories.I am also curious to hear how common they are found in the 86-88 serial number range in particular.I am becoming more and more convinced that the post 1986 "SEC" guitars were set aside and used as endorsement stock, for artist use.For example, Slash's '87 Les Paul Standard, as stated above, has a serial number dating it to June 1987.Fast forward to Februthe GNR show at the Ritz in New York (this was recorded for the MTV special). But if possible, it would be great to learn specifically about the early Henry J. Technically speaking, the factory second designation might not even exist in Gibson production as of today.I think Henry's statement that he ended the sale of factory seconds to customers could be true - since what we are talking about (using the factory seconds as endorsement stock) is different than selling these guitars to customers.Of course, this is all circumstantial evidence. I find that time gap of approximately nine months to be pretty good evidence that Gibson had set these "factory seconds" aside for artist/endorsement use. I think Gibson might have actually charged him (at an artist discount price) for the guitars, rather than giving them totally for free.Anyway. Apparently, at that time, Gibson was like: "Slash who?". According to what I have read, Slash "ordered" both guitars directly from Gibson, so it is not as if they were sitting at some shop or in dealer inventory for that time period. As far as I know, this is the first appearance of the '87 Standard (factory second serial number posted in the earlier post above). This places the timeline to approximately March 1988 (give or take a couple weeks in either direction) when Slash got his two '87 Standard factory seconds. This is also a lag time of approximately 9 months between the serial number date (June 1987) and the time Slash got the guitars (March 1988).
